Congratulatory messages pour in as weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins India’s first gold in CWG 2022

New Delhi: Tokyo Olympic silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has done it again, winning the gold in the 49kg category in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

She also broke the Games record in snatch, clean and jerk and established her reign in weightlifting.

Mirabai easily lifted 113 kg in clean and jerk in the second attempt and people had already started celebrating as she was much ahead of other competitors. The Olympics Silver medalist, a resident of Imphal East, was flooded with congratulatory messages on the social networks platforms.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “The exceptional Mirabai Chanu makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes.”

Chief Minister N Biren said, “Overjoyed and super proud of Manipur's superstar daughter, Mirabai Chanu on winning India's first Gold medal at the CWG 2022 in 49 kg weightlifting category. Heartiest Congratulations and thanks for bringing laurels for India. You have kept your promise. What a proud moment. Jai Hind !”

Arvind Kejriwal wrote: “Congratulations to @mirabai_chanu for securing India's first gold at this year's #CommonwealthGames. This is a tremendous feat! She has consistently proven her mettle at the international arena. The whole country takes pride in her fantastic success.”
