England hands biggest test defeat to India on its home turf, takes 1-0 lead

Chennai: Indian captain Virat Kohli's 24th Test fifty went in vain as spinner Jack Leach (4/76) and James Anderson (3/17) guided England to a magnificent 227-run win in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series, here on Tuesday.
Chasing 420 for victory, India were bowled out for 192 on the fifth and final day of the first Test.
Virat Kohli (72) and Shubman Gill (50) were the highest scorers in the Indian fourth innings.
For Englnad, Anderson produced a classic spell of reverse swing to take 3 wickets. He and left-arm spinner Jack Leach (4/76) shared seven wickets between them to clinch a memorable win for England after skipper Joe Root's magnificent double century.
 
Earlier, England had posted a mammoth 578 in the first innings and bowled India out for 337.
However, they opted against enforcing the follow-on at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Day 4. The tourists had walked out to bat instead and were bowled out for 178 an hour before stumps.
