In a tense Euro 2024 quarterfinal clash at Volksparkstadion on Friday, France secured their spot in the semifinals by defeating Portugal 5-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

The first half saw a balanced contest with few clear-cut chances for either side. Portugal had the first significant opportunity in the 16th minute when Bruno Fernandes’ shot was blocked by French defender William Saliba. Four minutes later, France responded with a long-range effort from Theo Hernandez that forced Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa into action.

After the break, Portugal began to dominate. Joao Cancelo’s through ball found Fernandes at the hour mark, but his powerful shot was saved by French keeper Mike Maignan. Moments later, Maignan denied Vitinha’s central strike, keeping the score level.

France nearly took the lead in the 66th minute, but Rúben Dias made a crucial block to prevent Randal Kolo Muani’s attempt. Despite late pressure from France, including chances for Eduardo Camavinga and Ousmane Dembele, the match remained goalless at the end of regular time.

In extra time, Portugal was the more aggressive side, while France focused on defending and counterattacks. Joao Felix had a golden opportunity to score a late winner, but his header from a tight angle hit the side netting.

The match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout. Both teams converted their first two penalties before Felix’s low shot struck the left post. Hernandez then sealed the victory for France by converting the final penalty, making it 5-3.

"It wasn't easy today. We made our own life difficult, but we defended very well and kept a strong opponent at bay. We were not nervous during the shootout and won the match," said French goalkeeper Maignan. With this victory, France will face Spain in the semifinal at Munich's Allianz Arena on Tuesday. (UNI)
