Rourkela: In an extraordinary tale of perseverance and dedication, Indian Men's Hockey player Jugraj Singh, who once supported his family by selling Indian flags and water bottles at the Attari-Wagah border, has emerged as the top-scorer in the Men’s Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25.
Playing for the newly crowned champions, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, Jugraj’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings to hockey stardom is a testament to his indomitable spirit.
Born in Attari, Punjab, Jugraj's early life was shaped by adversity. His father, a porter in the Indian Army, fell ill, prompting Jugraj to step up and contribute to the family’s livelihood from a young age. Reflecting on those difficult times, Jugraj shared, “I never once questioned why I was doing it. At that time, my family was my top priority, and I knew that my hard work was the only way to support them.”
Selling water bottles and flags at the border, Jugraj kept his passion for hockey alive. “Hard work, in whatever form, would pave the way for my future,” he recalled, “and it did.”
Inspired by his elder brother, who played hockey in their village, Jugraj began playing the sport at just seven years old. His brother, who later gave up the game to care for their father, was a constant source of encouragement. “He deserves all the credit for where I am today,” said Jugraj, acknowledging his brother's support.
The 28-year-old defender's breakthrough moment came in the Hero HIL 2024-25, where he netted 12 goals and played a pivotal role in Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers’ championship victory. His stunning hat-trick in the final against Hyderabad Toofans was a highlight of the tournament. "Scoring a hat-trick in a final is something every player dreams of. Once I scored two goals, I felt in my zone and went for the third," he said, reflecting on the unforgettable moment.
Jugraj’s performance in his maiden HIL season has earned him the top-scorer title and positioned him as one of India’s emerging hockey stars. “The HIL was a big opportunity for me to show what I’m capable of. I wanted to prove I could be a reliable goal-scorer and penalty corner converter,” he explained.
In addition to his natural talent, Jugraj attributes his success to rigorous preparation and constant self-improvement. “I always focus on reading the opposition goalkeepers before each match, which helped me convert penalty corners,” he said. “I’ve learned from every tournament, every game, and every player.”
With his sights set on upcoming international tournaments, including the FIH Pro League in Bhubaneswar, Jugraj is determined to continue his upward trajectory. "The HIL has given me a massive confidence boost," he said. "I’m in good form, and I’ll carry this momentum into the FIH Pro League.”
Looking back at his journey, Jugraj remains grounded and committed to his goal of achieving success on the world stage. “I’ve faced my share of obstacles, but I’ve always believed that hard work can overcome anything. I will continue to work hard as long as I have the strength to play for India.”
Acknowledging the support of his Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers Captain, Rupinder Pal Singh, Jugraj expressed gratitude for the guidance and trust that helped him excel in the tournament. “Rupinder’s faith in me allowed me to prove my worth on the field. He guided me throughout the tournament, and I owe a lot of my success to his mentorship,” he said.
With his eyes set on the World Cup, Asian Games, and the next Olympics, Jugraj is determined to bring further glory to India. “I want to win Gold at the World Cup, Asian Games, and the Olympics. That’s my next big goal,” he said, his commitment unwavering as he continues to chase his dreams.
Jugraj Singh's story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of resilience, dedication, and belief in oneself.
