Bengaluru: In the first Test of the series between India and New Zealand here on Thursday, India won the toss and elected to bat, despite a pitch that has been under covers and shows signs of early dampness.

Captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the slight stickiness of the surface but emphasized the importance of putting runs on the board first.

India made two changes from their previous Test squad: Sarfaraz Khan replaces Shubman Gill, and Kuldeep Yadav comes in for Akash Deep.

New Zealand, on the other hand, is fielding a pace-heavy attack with Matt Henry joining the ranks, while Kane Williamson is missing due to a groin injury, with Will Young stepping into his shoes.

The pitch report from experts Simon Doull and Murali Kartik highlighted that the outfield is in excellent condition despite the recent rain, with the new ball likely to assist seamers early on, and spinners expected to come into play later.

Key players to watch include India's veteran duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are both eager for big runs, while New Zealand will look to their openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway to handle India's potent spin attack.
