Johannesburg: Dean Elgar's unbeaten knock of 96 helped South Africa beat India by seven wickets on a rain-hit Day 4 in the second Test here at the Wanderers stadium on Thursday.

With the win, South Africa levelled the three-match series, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), against India 1-1.

South Africa have now become the first Test side to beat India by successfully chasing a target of 200-plus on two occasions, with the last one coming in 2007 at Cape Town.

Play resumed after rain wiped out two sessions of the fourth day. Following the inspection, umpires decided that a total of 34 overs would be bowled in the remainder of the day.

South Africa, who were on 118/2 on Day 3 and needed another 122 runs to win, started off well with Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen in the middle. Elgar, who continued to be a thorn in India's flesh, brought up his fifty from 131 balls.

Mohammed Shami got the much-needed breakthrough for India as the fast bowler dismissed van der Dussen for a well-made 40 off 92 balls. On a length ball outside the off, the South African looked to defend but ended up getting an outside edge and was caught at first slip.

Change of partner didn't deter Elgar's focus as he smashed two consecutive boundaries off Shami. Elgar along with Temba Bavuma took South Africa past the 200-run mark.

With still an hour of play left, it looked South Africa wanted to wrap the match as soon as possible.

Bavuma dispatched Shardul Thakur for four before Elgar slapped the winning boundary off Ravichandran Ashwin. While Elgar remained unbeaten on 96, Bavuma was on 23 not out. India had set a target of 240 after scoring 202 and 266 in their two innings. (UNI)
