The Karnataka government has formally approved the hosting of Indian Premier League 2026 matches at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the venue.

The approval came after a government-appointed expert committee conducted a detailed review of the stadium’s infrastructure, safety measures, and preparedness for large-scale sporting events. Officials from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) also participated in the meeting, which was chaired by the state’s Home Minister.

With the clearance in place, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the reigning IPL champions, will host their home fixtures at the historic stadium. The opening match of IPL 2026 is scheduled to be played on March 28, featuring RCB against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The government’s decision follows heightened scrutiny of the stadium after a tragic stampede in June 2025 that claimed 11 lives, prompting authorities to temporarily suspend the venue from hosting major events while safety protocols were reviewed.

Following the approval, KSCA officials welcomed the decision and assured that all necessary safety guidelines and crowd management measures will be strictly implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of matches.

The IPL 2026 season is set to begin on March 28, with Bengaluru once again hosting top-tier cricket action at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
