Bengaluru: MK Gautham, a World Cup-winning Kho Kho player, has called for a review of the state’s sports policies, citing a noticeable difference in the treatment of athletes across neighbouring states.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Gautham pointed out the discrepancies in how athletes from Maharashtra are recognised and supported, urging the Karnataka government to take note of the neighbouring state’s approach before making decisions on awards and funding.

"We are not insulting the Chief Minister by rejecting the award, but we did not get the respect we deserve. Hence, we are rejecting the cash award of Rs 5 lakh," Gautham said that is likely to spark broader discussions.

Gautham further demanded that the state government thoroughly review the matter, keeping in mind the Maharashtra government announcing a Rs 2.25 crore cash reward and government jobs for the players of their winning team.

This rejection highlights a larger concern about the lack of attention given to rural sports, with Gautham adding that, "These days, parents do not let their children play rural games, and all government funds are released for cricket. Even before the last ball is played, people (government) announce it on Twitter about the prize and award."

Echoing similar concerns, B Chaitra, another world-cup winning kho-kho player, stated, "We are demanding the same amount which is given to other World Cup players. Like other sports persons, we too have earned medals, but we are deprived of the facilities and recognition that other athletes receive."
