Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have appointed Rajat Patidar as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The 31-year-old batsman, a key member since 2022, has been instrumental in RCB’s campaigns.
Patidar first joined RCB in 2021 and returned in 2022 as a replacement player, delivering a breakout performance with 333 runs at a strike rate of 152.75 in 12 matches. His unbeaten 112 off 54 balls in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants remains a highlight. In 27 matches, he has scored one century and seven fifties.
RCB Head Coach Andy Flower lauded Patidar’s leadership, saying, “Rajat’s calmness and simplicity will serve him well as a captain. We have observed his leadership at the state level and liked what we saw. He is a brave cricketer who cares about his teammates, qualities that will earn him respect.”
Mo Bobat, RCB’s Director of Cricket, explained the decision: “We had extensive discussions, including with Virat Kohli, and found compelling reasons to back Rajat. The timing is ideal, with a fresh squad and a new leader marking a new chapter for RCB.”
Patidar expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am not overly expressive but always aware of match situations. My focus will be on backing my players and creating a relaxed, confident environment. Learning from Virat Kohli’s experience will be invaluable.”
Virat Kohli endorsed Patidar, saying, “You have earned this role. The fans love watching you play, and the team is right behind you. I urge everyone to support him fully.”
Former captain Faf du Plessis added, “Leading RCB is an honour. You have a strong leadership group—lean on them. Most importantly, keep hitting those sixes!”
Owned by Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, a subsidiary of Diageo India, RCB has been a formidable IPL franchise, reaching three finals and making consecutive playoff appearances from 2020 to 2022. Their remarkable 2024 campaign saw them qualify for the playoffs despite long odds.
RCB’s women’s team clinched the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 title, having secured Smriti Mandhana as their marquee player.
The franchise has expanded its brand beyond cricket with ventures like RCB Hustle (a fitness product), Dash of RCB (a premium non-alcoholic cocktail mixer), and RCB Bar & Cafe.
