Dambulla: The stage is set for fireworks as Smriti Mandhana and India, the reigning champions, brace themselves for a thrilling showdown against arch-rivals Pakistan in the eagerly awaited Women’s Asia Cup opener at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium here on Friday.

Mandhana, in sensational form, headlines a formidable batting lineup that includes the explosive Shafali Verma and the dependable Jemimah Rodrigues.

Mandhana’s recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular, anchoring India’s batting with finesse at the top of the order. She is complemented by Shafali’s aggressive stroke play, which has struck fear into opposition bowlers, and Jemimah’s consistent contributions in the middle order.

India’s bowling arsenal, led by the dynamic Pooja Vastrakar and backed by spin sensations Radha Yadav, Deepti Sharma, Sajeevan Sajana, and Shreyanka Patil, is equally potent. Their combined prowess has been instrumental in India’s recent successes, offering depth and strategic flexibility.

Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, India enters the tournament as the dominant force, having clinched three of the last four T20 editions and all four 50-over formats of the Asia Cup. Their T20 record speaks volumes, boasting an impressive 17 wins out of 20 matches, including a commanding victory over Sri Lanka in the 2022 final.

Against Pakistan in T20 cricket, India holds a commanding advantage with 11 wins from 14 encounters, setting the stage for a compelling battle fueled by recent strong form. Despite a rain-affected series against South Africa, where they drew 1-1, India remains upbeat and poised for a strong start.

In contrast, Pakistan, led by Nida Dar, has undergone significant squad restructuring following their tough series against England. New talents such as Iram Javed, Omaima Sohail, Syeda Aroob Shah, and Tasmia Rubab inject fresh energy into the team as they strive to rebuild momentum and unity ahead of their clash with India.

In Group A action at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Nepal returns to the competition after an absence since 2016, facing off against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who are buoyed by a stellar performance record this year in their second consecutive appearance.

With the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals, the Women’s Asia Cup promises thrilling cricket and fierce competition as teams vie for regional supremacy and crucial momentum heading into the T20 World Cup later this year.
