Bengaluru: Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Madhu Bangarappa, is facing criticism from BJP members for his hairstyle reminiscent of cricketer MS Dhoni's, sparking a heated debate.

The BJP has voiced disapproval of Bangarappa's long, unkempt hair, with some even offering to sponsor his haircuts. This controversy arises following earlier ridicule directed at Bangarappa for admitting his difficulty in reading Kannada fluently.

Tensions escalated when Bangarappa's brother, BJP's Kumar Bangarappa, questioned his educational credentials, challenging his claim of being a graduate. BJP State President Vijayendra Yediyurappa commented on Bangarappa's appearance, emphasising the importance of presenting oneself neatly, especially for someone in charge of the education sector.

"The education department is responsible for shaping the future of our students. If the education minister is to visit a school, it is only fitting that he presents himself neatly, starting with combing his hair," he said.

Bangarappa responded defiantly, suggesting Vijayendra handle his matters and even offered to let him trim his hair. Vijayendra clarified his stance, citing concerns about declining educational standards and the need for leaders to set positive examples, particularly in grooming and appearance.

At a subsequent press conference, Vijayendra proposed financial assistance for Bangarappa's haircuts, emphasising the importance of maintaining neatness.

"If finances are the problem, I will instruct our Yuva Morcha to cover his haircut expenses every month. Let him get a haircut and maintain neatness from now on," he said.

Bangarappa, however, retaliated, pointing out BJP's electoral setbacks and questioning their focus on superficial issues rather than substantive governance.

Drawing comparisons to renowned figures like APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangarappa defended his hairstyle, emphasising his dedication to public service over appearance.

"Even Kalam had long hair," said he and queried why BJP members remained silent on former President Dr APJ. Abdul Kalam's hairstyle or Prime Minister Narendra Modi's unkempt beard during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite BJP's objections to his excuses for not getting a haircut, Bangarappa clarified that his remarks were not aimed at any particular community.
