Mumbai: Tesla has formally launched its Indian operations on Tuesday with the inauguration of its first showroom at Mumbai's premium Bandra Kurla Complex.

The 4,000-square-ft experience center at Maker Maxity Commercial Complex introduces the American automaker to India's burgeoning electric vehicle sector, featuring the China-imported Model Y SUV as its debut offering.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presided over the opening ceremony, positioning Tesla's arrival as a validation of Mumbai's status as an innovation and sustainability hub.

"This reflects confidence in our state as a financial and entrepreneurial capital aligned with Tesla's vision," Fadnavis stated, extending an official invitation for the automaker to establish manufacturing and research facilities in Maharashtra.

The company's initial strategy focuses exclusively on selling imported vehicles through retail channels, confirmed by Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy in June 2025.

Tesla has secured Mumbai warehousing to support operations, with Model Y deliveries scheduled to commence in Q3 2025. The CBU (Completely Built-Up) SUV retails at approximately 59.89 lakh rupees (equivalent to $69,770 USD), featuring premium amenities including expansive touchscreen interfaces, internet connectivity, and dual-tone interiors across multiple color options.

This market entry follows years of anticipation and coincides with India's revised EV import policies. While import duties have been reduced, the government maintains uniform regulations for all manufacturers rather than offering Tesla-specific concessions.

Industry analysts note Tesla's expansion addresses slowing growth in core markets like China and the United States, though the company has yet to commit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" manufacturing objectives despite Maharashtra's overtures.
