Ranbir Kapoor has been making headlines lately for his upcoming film Ramayana, in which he plays the role of Lord Ram. While many fans are excited about his portrayal, some have raised questions about his casting, citing his past roles. Sadhguru, however, has come out in support of Ranbir, emphasizing that judging an actor based on their past roles is unfair.
Sadhguru's Support for Ranbir Kapoor
In a special conversation with Namit Malhotra, Sadhguru was asked about the controversy surrounding Ranbir's casting. When the producer of Ramayana mentioned that people were questioning how Ranbir could play Lord Ram, based on his previous roles, Sadhguru responded, “That’s not fair. He only acted in a certain way before. Tomorrow he may even play Ravan. That’s what professional actors do.”
He added, “But at the same time, a film succeeds because of the audience, not just the actors or directors. So their expectations cannot be ignored. It’s a heavy responsibility, but both the actor and director should try to imbibe a bit of Rama’s nature.”
When Namit raised the issue of actors portraying divine figures like Lord Ram, Hanuman, and Sita, he pointed out that people often expect them to truly embody these gods. Sadhguru responded, saying, " If they have sense, they should become. It’s a rare opportunity to play Ram, so one should transform oneself. When else will you get such a chance? Still, there will always be unrealistic expectations."
He then shared an example from Telugu cinema, citing the legendary N.T. Rama Rao (NTR), "In Telugu cinema, people worshipped NTR as Krishna because he played that role in 15 or 16 films. Huge cutouts showed him with a flute, and he even won elections because of that image. To some extent, this continues today. If someone acts as Rama, I expect a little gentleness from him. But it’s unfair to the actor, because it’s only a profession. He is just acting. Still, if playing Rama helps the actor absorb some of his qualities, it would be wonderful."
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari
During the conversation, Sadhguru also praised South Indian actor Yash, calling him "handsome." Nitesh Tiwari is directing Ramayana, which will be released in two parts and is being made on a grand scale.
In the film, Ravi Dubey will portray Lord Lakshman, while Sai Pallavi will play Sita. The movie also stars Sunny Deol, Arun Govil, and Lara Dutta among others.
