Beverly Hills: Demi Moore, a Hollywood icon whose career spans over four decades, captivated the audience at the Golden Globes Awards as she accepted the honour for 'Best Actress in a Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy for her intriguing performance in "The Substance".
The film, which examines the harrowing journey of an actress grappling with the implacable passage of time, mirrors Moore's own narrative of pliancy and self-discovery in an industry that often dismisses longevity.
“I really wasn’t expecting that,” she said. “I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor", her voice laced with emotion as she accepted the award.
The actress then shared a striking anecdote from the height of her fame in the 1990s, when she was a box office sensation with hits like "Ghost" (1990), "Indecent Proposal" (1993), and "Striptease" (1996). Despite her immense commercial success, Moore revealed she was deemed as a "popcorn actress" by a producer, a label that haunted her for decades.
"At that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something I was allowed to have,” Moore said, clutching her trophy. “I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but I couldn’t be acknowledged. I bought in, and I believed that” she said during Sunday's award ceremony.
The 62-year-old actress disclosed that her retreat from acting in recent years stemmed from those lingering insecurities. Yet, she found salvation in "The Substance", a project that reignited her passion for storytelling.
“As I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance. And the universe told me, ‘You’re not done.’”
Moore expressed profound gratitude to Coralie Fargeat, the film's writer and director, for entrusting her with such a complex role. Dhe also thanked those who supported her during her lowest moments, when self-doubt crept in and threatened to silence her voice, according to Vanity Fair.
Concluding her speech, the actress shared a powerful message of self-acceptance, “In those moments, when we don’t think we’re smart enough, or pretty enough, or skinny enough, or successful enough, or basically just not enough…I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’”
With her Golden Globe in hand, Moore declared this win a testament to perseverance, “a reminder that I do belong".
