The question of whether women can perform Chhath Puja during their menstrual cycle is both religious and cultural — and opinions differ across traditions and families. Some believe that women should refrain from religious rituals during this time, as menstruation is seen as a period of physical rest and emotional imbalance. However, others believe that devotion lies in the heart, and with proper hygiene and care, women can continue their spiritual practices.

Chhath Puja is one of the most sacred and rigorous Hindu fasts, emphasizing purity and discipline. Here’s what traditional beliefs and practices say about performing Chhath Puja during menstruation:

1. Continuing the Fast

According to most traditional beliefs, if menstruation begins during Chhath Puja, the woman should not discontinue the fast.

This is because Chhath is a family and ancestral vow that is passed down through generations, and breaking it midway is considered inauspicious.

Women may continue the fast but are advised to follow certain guidelines and restrictions to maintain ritual purity.

2. Rules for Worship and Offering Arghya

Avoid touching puja materials: During menstruation, the woman observing the fast should not directly touch sacred items like the prasad, arghya basket, or other puja objects.

Choose a helper: In such cases, a close family member — such as a husband, mother, or another female relative — can assist by preparing offerings, carrying items to the ghat, and performing rituals. The helper must also observe cleanliness and purity.

Offering Arghya: The fasting woman may join her family at the ghat, fold her hands in prayer, and mentally offer devotion, but she should avoid personally giving Arghya to the Sun God, especially during the first 3–4 days of her cycle. Give Arghya with the help of a family member.

On the fifth day: Some traditions allow women, after bathing and cleansing themselves, to participate in cooking Prasad and preparing offerings.

3. Health and Physical Comfort

The Chhath fast is physically demanding, involving a 36-hour waterless (nirjala) fast. If a woman experiences fatigue, weakness, or dizziness during her period, she should listen to her body.

Medical experts recommend avoiding strict fasting during this time if it causes health strain. Instead, women may focus on maintaining inner devotion through prayers, meditation, and cleanliness.
