Lahore: The police in this city of Pakistan threw acid besides firing gunshots to disperse a protest by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), according to the activists of the radical group and some media persons.

Four members of the organisation were killed due to police torture and firing, The Express Tribune of Pakistan reported, quoting an unnamed TLP Member of Sindh Provincial Assembly.

The newspaper said four others were also killed and 263 injured in the clash between the TLP activists and police personnel on Wednesday when the authorities tried to stop the protesters' march towards Islamabad.

The TLP Member of Sindh Assembly was also quoted as saying that security agencies were harassing journalists covering the protests.

There are several other reports on social media saying that the police threw acid and fired gunshots shots at the “unarmed” TLP protesters. Some videos have also surfaced, suggesting use of some toxic liquid by the security personnel.

One of the Twitter users going by the name of TLP said, "You (Pakistani authorities) think that if you shoot at us, shell us, throw acid on us, then we will back from our goal. Whatever you do but we will not support the oppressor."

A journalist, Atta ul Murtaza, tweeted, "Police are secretly firing from factories. The reckless use of water cannon, according to the participants, is throwing red liquid. 3 Persons of TLP martyred by the attack of Police & Rangers.Acid tankers rained down on unarmed protesters."

One Dr FAB tweeted: "How come international media & human rights organizations raising uproar over acid attacks in #Pakistan is least bothered when these acid attacks are committed by @ImranKhanPTI on unarmed protestors of #TLP? Only explanation is that international groups have Islamophobia.@amnesty."

The TLP has launched the agitation to press for ouster of French Ambassador to Pakistan over the cartoon controversy.

The Pakistan government yesterday declared TLP a "militant" outfit, saying it would no longer be treated as a political organisation. (UNI)
