Bengaluru: AICC General Secretary, Priyanka Vadra-Gandhi, took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally in South Bengaluru here on Tuesday, emphasising the sacrifices made by her mother, former AICC president Sonia Gandhi, and her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Priyanka recounted the sacrifices made by her family, stating that Sonia Gandhi had sacrificed her mangalsutra for the nation's welfare. She further stated that Indira Gandhi had donated her gold during her regime's war effort. These sacrifices, she stressed, were made with the nation's best interests at heart.
Her comments were prompted by recent statements made by PM Modi, which implied that the Congress had figuratively "taken people's gold and ripped off women’s mangalsutra."
Furthermore, Priyanka criticised PM Modi for failing to acknowledge or understand the significant contributions of women to society. She argued that Modi would not make "derogatory" comments if he genuinely appreciated the invaluable role that women play in the nation's development.
Addressing the farmer protests, Gandhi highlighted Modi's apparent indifference towards the mangalsutras of the 600 farmers who lost their lives during the protests. She accused the Prime Minister of making such comments to garner votes and intimidate women.
Additionally, Priyanka lambasted the BJP for maintaining a "low level of discourse" during the election campaign. She stressed that Bengaluru, being one of India's most highly educated cities, deserved a more substantive conversation during election season. She urged voters to choose between governance based on values (Neeti) or mere drama (Nautanki).
Mocking the BJP's strategy of recruiting candidates from other parties, Priyanka likened it to a "laundry service." She drew attention to the party's peculiar relationship with corruption allegations, noting that this might be the first election where two chief ministers have been arrested, with the opposition continually under fire.
Earlier in Chitradurga, Priyanka cautioned voters against hate speeches and emphasized the importance of the Constitution. She cautioned against potential changes to the Constitution if the BJP were to secure 400 seats, stressing that such amendments would profoundly impact citizens' lives.
