In Hindu tradition and astrology, eclipses are often considered inauspicious periods. After the solar eclipse earlier this year, the first lunar eclipse of 2026 is set to occur on March 3, 2026. According to traditional beliefs, the duration of a lunar eclipse is not considered favourable for religious rituals, and several activities are avoided during this time. But what happens if someone passes away during a lunar eclipse? Should the last rites be performed immediately, or should they be delayed? Here’s what religious beliefs and scriptures say.
When Is the First Lunar Eclipse of 2026?
The lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026, will begin at 6:16 PM and conclude at 6:46 PM, lasting approximately 30 minutes and 9 seconds.
Astrology scholars suggest that one should strictly follow scriptural guidelines during an eclipse, as ignoring them is believed to have adverse effects. In traditional belief, a death occurring during an eclipse is often linked to the soul’s karmic journey and past-life deeds.
Should the Funeral Be Performed During the Eclipse?
According to religious customs, even touching items meant for worship is discouraged during an eclipse. At the same time, Hindu rites emphasise that proper funeral rituals are essential for the soul’s peace and liberation (moksha).
Traditionally, if a person dies during a lunar eclipse, it is considered appropriate to perform the cremation and final rites after the eclipse ends.
What Does the Garuda Purana Say?
As per the Garuda Purana, cremation should ideally be carried out as soon as possible after death. Delaying the last rites for an extended period solely because of an eclipse is not considered scripturally appropriate.
Therefore, depending on circumstances, the final rites may be performed without unnecessary delay. The scripture stresses that timely cremation ensures proper spiritual transition of the departed soul.
What Should Be Done If Death Occurs During an Eclipse?
Astrologers advise the following traditional practices if someone passes away during an eclipse:
Cover the body with a clean cloth and keep it in a safe place.
Family members may sit near the body and chant mantras or take the name of God.
Light a sesame oil lamp near the head of the deceased.
Sprinkle Ganga water on the body.
Place a tulsi leaf in the mouth of the deceased.
Perform the cremation rituals and light the funeral pyre after proper rites.
Will Sutak Be Observed in India?
The March 3 lunar eclipse will be visible in India. As a result, the Sutak period will be considered valid.
According to religious belief, the Sutak period for a lunar eclipse begins approximately 9 hours before the eclipse starts. This means that on March 3, 2026, the Sutak effect will be observed from the morning hours.
During Sutak:
Temple doors are closed.
Worship and touching idols are avoided.
Cooking and eating food are generally prohibited.
However, scriptures provide relaxation for children, the elderly, and the sick. For them, Sutak is considered effective from 3:35 PM onwards.
