31 candidates in fray for five assembly seats in Assam

Guwahati:As many as 31 candidates are in the fray for the by-election to five assembly seats in Assam which will go to the polls on October 30.
The by-elections to the Gossaigaon, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thowra constituencies will be held on October 30.
The counting of votes will take place on November 2. The entire polling process will be over by November 5.
A total of 7,96,456 voters are likely to exercise their franchise on October 30. Out of the total number-- 4,03,374 are males, 3,93,078 females and four are transgenders.
A total of 3,165 are service voters while 8,864 electors are aged above 80. The official release further stated that as many as 4,998 voters are People with Disability. After revision, a total of 43,229 voters were added to the electoral roll.
With 2,17, 432 electors, Tamulpur has the highest number of voters while Thowra has the lowest at 1,15,971.
Following the deaths of sitting MLAs, the by-elections to Gossaigaon and Tamulpur were necessiated. On the other hand, incumbents of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra resigned from their seats and joined the saffron party.
Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has vacated his seat from Majuli following his recent nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
The BJP has 59 legislators, while its ally AGP and UPPL have 9 and five MLAs respectively in the 126-member House.(UNI)
