Senior Congress leader from Maharashtra Sanjay Nirupam was expelled from the party for six years for indulging in indiscipline and anti-party statements. Now, the former MP said that the grand old party had expelled him after it received his resignation letter.

Sharing a screenshot of his resignation mail to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Nirupam wrote on X, "Looks like immediately after the party received my resignation letter last night, they decided to issue my expulsion. Good to see such promptness. Just sharing this information."

Nirupam also said he will give a detailed statement between 11:30 am and 12 pm today.

Nirupam, a former MP from Mumbai North, was expelled from the Congress days after he hits out at his party leadership amid seat-sharing talks with Shiv Sena (UBT) for the Lok Sabha elections.

On Wednesday, the party in a statement issued by its general secretary KC Venugopal said, "Taking note of the complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, the Hon'ble Congress president has approved the expulsion of Shri Sanjay Nirupam from the party for six years with immediate effect".

Earlier in the day, Nirupam on his social media post X had asked the Congress "not to waste much energy and stationery for me. Instead use your remaining energy and stationery to save the party".

"Anyway, the party is going through a severe financial crisis. The period of one week that I had given has been completed today. Tomorrow I will take the decision myself".
