Court hands Instigator Sharjeel imam judicial custody till 3rd March

New Delhi: Delhi Police have filed the chargesheet in the December 15 Jamia-New Friends Colony violence case, naming Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam as an "instigator''.  
Police said the chargesheet was filed on February 13. CCTV clips, call detail records and statements of more than 100 witnesses were attached. No Jamia Millia Islamia student has been named in the chargesheet.Meanwhile, Imam has been sent to judicial remand till March 3 by a Delhi court. 
 
The chargesheet has been filed under various sections  of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) -- 307 (attempt to murder), 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing public servant), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant) and 427 (mischief causing damage). 
 
A total of 17 people have been arrested so far in connection with the violence. On December 15, violence had erupted around Jamia Millia Islamia University during an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protest march by the varsity's students, leaving around 60 people, including students, police personnel and fire fighters injured.
 
To disperse the protesters, the police used batons and teargas shells. They entered the Jamia university campus, saying that the rioters had taken shelter in the campus. The police was accused of brutality by the students. 
 
Last week, some new alleged videos of police violence and students carrying stones surfaced on internet. Police said they were investigating the new videos.(UNI)
