ED raids Gitanjali jewels outlets in Kolkata, seizes gems and jewelry worth over Rs 7 crore

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating Gitanjali Group promoter Mehul Chokshi's involvement in the Rs 11500 crore fraud in the PNB in Mumbai in connivance with Nirav Modi, has seized gems and jewellery worth over Rs 7 crores from different locations in this metropolis, official sources said today.
The ED sleuths in five/six groups fanned out at different parts of the city since Sunday and continued their raiding at the showrooms and outlets of Gitanjali jewels and seized gems and jewellery worth over Rs 7 crore and confiscated bundles of documents of businesses, a source who has knowledge of the seizure articles, said.He said the the raids were continuing for past 24 hours at these show rooms located at Jadavpur, Kasba, Salt Lake, New Town and Elgin Road, mostly located in south Kolkata and eastern parts of the city.
Sources said the worth of the of the seizure articles would cross beyond Rs 10 cores at a rough estimate.The ED also had raided a diamond and jewellery showroom of Gitanjali Jewels at Durgapur, West Burdwan district of West Bengal on Saturday.They said the ED was making a list of showrooms and outlets of the company and may raid them shortly.State chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday took a swipe at Modi government over the PNB fraud saying, money laundering happened during demonetisation.“This is just the tip of the iceberg.
This big banking fraud was fueled at the time of Demonetisation. Big money laundering happened during DeMo,” she said.She claimed that key bank officials were changed. “Who are these people, put in? There are more banks involved. The full truth must come out,” she demanded.(UNI)
