Hariprasad opposition candidate for post of RS Deputy Chairman

New Delhi: Congress Rajya Sabha MP BK Hariprasad has been chosen as the joint opposition candidate for the post of Deputy chairman of the House.
 
Mr Hariprasad, who was chosen as the opposition candidate  after the other opposition parties did not press on their candidate for the post, on Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the post, sources in the Rajya Sabha secretariat said.

Mr hariprasad will be pitted against Harivansh Narayan Singh, the NDA nominee for the election of the Deputy chairman. Mr Harivansh has already filed his nomination for the post.

All the Opposition parties have decided to field its joint candidate against the NDA nominee.

Earlier, the name of Mrs Vandana Chavan of the NCP was doing the rounds as the opposition choice for the post. However, there was a lack of consensus on her name.

Wednesday is the last date for the filing of nomination for the post, election for which is scheduled to take place on August 9.

Mr Hariprasad is the Congress member of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

The post of the Deputy Chairman fell vacant after the retirement of Dr PJ Kurien from the House in July. (UNI)
