Hyderabad: The city police have arrested BJP legislator from Goshamahal Assembly constituency T. Raja Singh here on Tuesday for allegedly making derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad.
The 45-year-old legislator had uploaded a video on YouTube, allegedly referring to a particular community and to the recently concluded stand-up comedy show by Munawar Faruqui in Hyderabad.
After registering a FIR against him, the Hyderabad police took the BJP MLA into custody from his residence in the morning, police said here.
However, the police have not disclosed what sections have been invoked against the legislator.
Following the video going viral late Monday, several Muslim organizations held protests on Monday in the old city here demanding the arrest of Raja Singh, who said he had posted the video in response to Munawar Faruqui’s show held here on Sunday.
Raja Singh while reacting over the FIR registered against him, said it was a comedy video aimed against stand-up comedian Faruqui and was not against any particular religion or community.
Raja Singh had earlier also stirred controversy over his anti-Muslim rhetoric, which includes calling Muslims as traitors and calling for the shooting of Rohingya Muslims.
Several cases were also pending against him relating to his multiple controversial comments about Islam.
On September 2, 2020, Facebook labelled Singh as a "dangerous individual" and banned him from all Facebook platforms for his hate speech. (Inputs from UNI)
