Lucknow: Indian Railways is set to roll out stricter luggage rules for passengers, like those followed in air travel.
According to officials, passengers will now be required to weigh their luggage at electronic weighing machines at major railway stations and strictly adhere to prescribed weight limits.
Any excess baggage or bulky items that occupy significant space, even if under the weight limit, will attract additional charges or fines.
An official said that outlets selling apparel, footwear, electronics, and travel essentials will also be opened at these stations to enhance passenger convenience and boost railway revenue, giving stations a modern, airport-like experience.
As per the proposed rules, luggage limits will vary across travel classes:AC First Class passengers will be allowed up to 70 kg, AC Two-Tier passengers up to 50 kg, while AC Three-Tier and Sleeper Class passengers will be permitted 40 kg. For general class travellers, the limit will be 35 kg. Large-sized bags occupying extra space will also be subject to fines, regardless of weight.
NCR’s Prayagraj Division Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) Himanshu Shukla said, "This step is aimed at ensuring a more efficient and comfortable travel experience for passengers, especially on long-distance routes."
The initiative will first be launched at key NCR region stations, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, and Etawah.
Shukla added that passengers at these stations will only be allowed entry onto platforms once their luggage has been weighed and cleared within the prescribed limits.
