Justice Ranjan Gogoi sworn in as 46th CJI

New Delhi: Justice Ranjan Gogoi was on Wednesday sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI).Justice Gogoi, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, was administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
He took oath in the Darbar hall in the presence of several dignitaries including  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several ministers in the Modi government.
 
CJI Gogoi replaces Justice Dipak Mishra who retired on Tuesday.CJI Gogoi, who is the first Chief Justice of India from the North-East , will have a tenure of over 13 months till end of  November next year.
 
Born on November 18, 1954, Justice Gogoi began his career as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court in February 2001.
 
He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2010 and was appointed Chief Justice there in 2011. He came to the Supreme Court as a judge on April 23, 2012.
 
As per the norm, the name of Justice Gogoi, the senior-most after former CJI Dipak Misra, was recommended by the latter and the appointment was then confirmed by President Kovind in September this year.(UNI)
