Kamal Nath meets Sonia Gandhi amid buzz over leadership reshuffle

New Delhi: Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and Congress veteran Kamal Nath on Thursday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her official residence here.
Mr Nath's visit comes at a time when speculations are rife about organisational changes within the grand-old-party and a possible election for the post of president which have been cancelled thrice since Rahul Gandhi left the top post after the party's debacle in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Neither Mr Nath nor Ms Gandhi have disclosed the agenda of the meeting. However, as per sources, Ms Gandhi might want to take the help of Mr Nath to build a bridge with "G-23" or 23 Congress leaders, which includes veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kapil Sibal, who have formed a group and demanded an overhaul in the party setup.
Ironically, Mr Nath is having very good ties with both Ms Gandhi and "G-23" leaders.
Several leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, have advocated the idea of holding the polls to elect the next Congress president so that the party gets a leadership to contest elections and tackle issues. The last time polls were held was in 1997.
The meeting also comes against the backdrop of poll strategist Prashant Kishor's meeting with Gandhis.
Mr Nath had recently met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar. Last month, the NCP chief had called a meeting of opposition leaders and eminent persons to discuss the current situation of the country. (UNI)
