Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police will be approaching Pakistan High Commission (HC) in New Delhi through the Union Home Ministry to take back the body of most wanted Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant Abu Dujana, who was killed along with another militant in an encounter in Pulwama in south Kashmir. "We are approaching Pak HC to take back the body of Dujana so that his parents and other family members could see him before burial," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Munir Ahmad Khan said. However, he added, if the HC refused to take the body, he (Dujana) will be given proper burial here.

This is for the first time that state police has decided to approach Pakistan HC to take back the body of a militant since the eruption of militancy in the early 90s during which hundreds of Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) and other nationals were killed in encounters with security forces in the valley. The IGP said that Pak HC has been approached to claim the body of Dujana, who belonged to Gilgit-Baltistan in POK. However, the house owner where Dujana was hiding at the time of encounter yesterday said he (Dujana) had told them that he was from Karachi in Pakistan.

Police has refused to hand over Dujana's body to civilians for burial. In the past, bodies of hundreds of foreign militants were handed over to local Auqaf for burial in the valley. The IGP said he would write to the police headquarters for forwarding it to the Centre to take up the matter with the Pakistan HC in New Delhi. Dujana, was killed yesterday in a joint operation by Army, police and paramilitary forces in Pulwama. (UNI)
