Thane: Police have launched a search for a 62-year-old man accused of cheating a 73-year-old woman from Thane district out of more than 57 lakh under the pretext of marriage, police said on Wednesday.
According to officials at Vishnu Nagar police station, the victim, a resident of Nana Shankarshet Road in Dombivli, met the accused through his matrimonial advertisement in a newspaper.
Gaining her trust, he promised marriage and a comfortable life together in Pune.
The suspect convinced the woman to transfer 35 lakh for the purported purchase of a house in Pune, providing her with fake receipts and forged property documents.
He later stayed at her residence, during which he allegedly stole gold ornaments worth around 20 lakh, as well as her debit card, which he used to withdraw an additional 2.4 lakh.
After defrauding the woman last month, the accused vanished and remains untraceable.
