A 46-year-old Muslim man from Maharashtra was allegedly killed by three persons over his opposition to an interfaith marriage proposal for his daughter.
The incident took place in Kalyan Taluka of Thane district.
According to police, accused Avinash Khairat harboured one-sided feelings for victim Zakir Miya Shaikh’s elder daughter and had sought her hand in marriage, which was rejected by the father.
Khairat and two other persons stormed into Shaikh’s home on the day of Eid and fatally attacked him with sharp weapons and sticks and assaulted others present, including women. Shaikh was rushed to a hospital with severe injuries, where he breathed his last the following day, the official said.
A case of murder has been registered against the trio and two individuals have been detained in connection with the case, the official added.
