Mumbai/ New Delhi: Former Special Public Prosecutor in Ajmal Kasab case and eminent legal expert Adv. Ujjwal Nikam has been nominated member to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu.

Known for successfully prosecuting Ajmal Kasab- the lone captured terrorist involved in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Adv. Nikam has played a crucial role as a special public prosecutor in several high-profile and complex cases.

Born on March 30, 1953, in Jalgaon, Adv. Nikam hails from a family with a strong legal background. His father was a reputed barrister and judge. After earning a science degree, Nikam pursued law from Maniyar Law College and began practicing as an advocate, specialising in criminal law.

He started his legal career as a public prosecutor at the Jalgaon District Court and went on to represent the government in several significant cases at both the state and national levels. His notable cases include the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, the murder of music mogul Gulshan Kumar, the assassination of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, the Kopardi rape case, the 2013 Mumbai gang rape, and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Given the sensitive nature of the cases, Nikam has been provided with Z+ security, the second-highest level of protection in India.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of justice, he was also honoured with the Padma Shri award. His legacy continues through his son Abhijeet, marking the third generation of legal service in the family.
