An app-based cab driver in Mumbai was booked for allegedly raping a 41-year-old female passenger on multiple occasions since 2023. The accused driver also allegedly blackmailed the woman and extorted Rs 10 lakh from her.
According to police, the woman, who works with a private company, filed a complaint on Sunday stating that she hired the cab of Ajit Singh, a resident of Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, in February 2023. He befriended her during the trip and exchanged contact numbers, following which the two started chatting.
As per complaint filed by the woman, Singh gave her spiked juice and sexually assaulted her will at a hotel in Worli on March 22, 2023. He also allegedly shot obscene photos and videos, using which he blackmailed her and raped her on multiple occasions.
The woman further alleged that the accused extorted Rs 10 lakh from her by threatening to kill her younger son. When she refused to give more money to him, he snatched her mobile and uploaded a message on Facebook calling her a ‘call girl’.
Fed up of the harassment, the woman on Sunday approached the Worli police, who registered a zero FIR and transferred the case to NM Joshi Marg police station as the place of incident falls in their jurisdiction.
“We have registered a case of rape and extortion and are further verifying the allegations of the woman. We have formed teams to trace the accused,” said police officer from the NM Joshi Marg police station.
