National Women's Party floated, set to contests across India in 2019 polls

New Delhi. Amid growing demand to passing the Women Reservation Bill in Parliament, a new political party, National Women's Party (NWP), was launched on Tuesday at national capital, claiming exclusively for women and pledging to fight to ensure equal representation in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.

The NWP, heading by Dr Shwetha Shetty, a medical practitioner and a social worker from Telangana said her party will contest in 2019 general election across the country.The women in this country must think that opportunities will not land in your lap, you have to create that, she said while addressing mediapersons. 

Rejecting the idea to join any other political party as a member to fight for the cause, Dr Shetty said that "We want women to join politics independently, because, 74th amendment of the constitution allotted 23 percent of reservation for women in local bodies and panchayat,But that is not happening and men are ruling and taking decisions. We don't want that to happen in National Women's party.

"We want to establish 50 percent through peace and love, not by revolution", she added. Dr Shetty claimed that ground work for the party began in 2012 and it has the support from 1.45 lakhs women members of Telangana Mahila Samiti, a NGO, which she is heading.

Criticising the existing political parties for violating the principles of equality and women's right, she said we tried everything else to have at least 33 percent reservation for women in election.

We will not be quiet until we see that women are represented equally in parliament", Dr Shetty said.

The officials of new party said that they will conduct another press conference within 15 days at Telangana and will announce further details. (UNI)
