Over 1.20 lakh people lost their lives in road accidents due to negligence: NCRB

New Delhi: A total of 1.20 lakh people lost their lives due to negligence related to road accidents across the country during 2020, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows.
As per the data, a total of 1.36 lakh cases were reported in 2019 while 1.35 lakh cases in 2018, which is the slight decline in a total number of cases in comparison to previous years.
The NCRB data on road accident incidents shows no impact of lockdown in the country to curb the road accidents. In 2020, road accidents deaths due to negligence happened over 1201768.9 while the country remained under complete lockdown from March 25 to May 31, 2020 due to COVID-19 Pandemic (First Wave), during which time movement in public space was very limited.
NCRB report 2020 shows over 3. 91 lakh people have died in the last three years due to negligence related to road mishaps.
According to the report, in 2020 alone, there were 41195.3 cases of hit and run, while there were 47504 cases in 2019 and 47028 cases in 2018.
NCRB report shows, 52 cases of deaths due to negligence relating to rail accidents were reported in 2020, 55 cases in 2019 and 35 cases in 2018. (UNI)
