New Delhi: Rebel Janata Dal (United) leaders Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar were on Monday disqualified as members of the Rajya sabha, a communication from the office of Rajya Sabha chair Venkaiah Naidu said. Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the Rajya Sabha chairman, has disqualified Mr Yadav and Mr Anwar as members of the upper house of Parliament, JD (U) leader and party leader in the RS, RCP Singh said.

In his decision on the petition filed by Mr Singh against Mr Ansari and Mr Yadav, the Chairman of RS M. Venkaiah Naidu decided and declared ''under the 10th schedule of the Constitution of India that the Respondent, Sharad Yadav and Ali Anwar Ansari have incurred disqualification for being a Member of the House in terms of paragraph 2 (1)(a) of the 10th Schedule to the Constitution of India.'' ''Both of them have thus ceased to be a Member of the Rajya Sabha with immediate effect. I decide and declare accordingly,'' Mr Singh quoted the order in a post on social media.

The list of the JD (U) members in the RS does not include names of Mr Yadav and Mr Ansari. The disqualification comes in the wake of the petition filed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar faction seeking that the RS Chairman disqualify Mr Yadav and Mr Ansari.Mr Yadav, Mr Ansari along with some JD (U) leaders had opposed the decision of Mr Kumar to break away from the “Mahagathbandhan” (Grand Alliance) with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress to re-align with the Bharatiya Janata Party earlier this year.
