New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday laid down guidelines for makers of films, documentaries and creators of visual media content to avoid lampooning or disparaging portrayal of persons with disabilities.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra laid down 7-point guidelines for filmmakers and said visual media should not disparage the disabled but showcase their achievements.

The bench said depicting disability to counter social disparaging of such persons would not be barred. The bench also said the film certification body must invite the opinion of experts before allowing screening.

"Visual media should strive to depict diverse realities of persons with disabilities, showcasing not only their challenges but also successes, talents and contribution to society. They should neither be lampooned based on myths nor presented as super cripples," the CJI said.
