Agartala: A five-month-old baby girl was allegedly killed by her mother in Rampada Para ADC village, in Sonamura under Tripura’s Sepahijala district, after the mother became convinced that the child was the product of an extramarital affair.
Police said family members have identified the accused as Suchitrabala Debbarma, who is said to have been involved in a relationship with her father-in-law's cousin, Nirmal Debbarma.
Relatives claim that she believed the biological father of the infant was her lover, rather than her husband, Amit Kumar Debbarma.
Despite Amit reportedly accepting the child, ongoing disputes regarding her paternity frequently arose within the family. He noted that Suchitrabala often faced humiliation and ridicule from her in-laws, which exacerbated tensions. In the early hours of yesterday, she is alleged to have smothered the baby with a pillow, resulting in the child's death.
Police were informed shortly after the incident occurred, and a team from Sonamura police station arrived at the scene and transported the body to Sonamura hospital. However, the post-mortem examination could not be conducted immediately due to a lack of available medical officers, and it has been rescheduled for today.
The accused has been taken into custody and, according to police sources, admitted to the murder during questioning. This marks the second such incident in the state within a brief period. Just days prior, a TSR personnel was arrested in Behalabari, Khowai district, for allegedly murdering his infant daughter.
