Srinagar: Four militants and three soldiers were killed in an encounter in Nowgam sector near Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir. Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI that troops guarding LoC noticed a group of militants infiltrating into this side from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Naugam sector yesterday.
When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons, he said, adding that the troops retaliated and in the ensuing fierce gun battle two infiltrators were killed.

Two soldiers were also martyred in the encounter, he said, adding that a massive search operation was launched in the woods. He said contact was established with the remaining two militants today. “In the gunfight, both the militants were killed while a soldier was martyred,” he said. Col Kalia said four weapons and other war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site. (UNI)
