Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened with total affected population crossing 17 lakh figure and death toll at 44. Official sources said five deaths were reported in last 24 hours, taking the toll to 44. Highest number of 10 people have been killed in Lakhimpur district, followed by eight in Kamrup (metro).
The number of affected population crossed over 17.11 lakh in 25 districts. At least ten rivers are flowing over the danger level in the state, including the Brahmaputra, in several places.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today visited Majuli, inspected relief camps and talked to the camp inmates. He also took stock of the relief materials being provided to the camp inmates in the island district. Mr Sonowal asked the district administration to swing its men and materials for the relief and rescue operations and provide all facilities, including pure drinking water, to the flood affected people.
Mr Sonowal visited three relief camps at Kamalabari and Garmur areas and spent time with the flood-hit people and assured them to provide everything possible. Minister of State for Sports and Youth Welfare Naba Kumar Doley also accompanied him. The chief minister represents Majuli in the state legislative assembly. (UNI)
