Ranchi: At least two people lost their lives on Wednesday evening after being hit by a train in Jamtara district of Jharkhand. The incident occurred near Kaljharia, approximately 140 km away from Ranchi.
According to a statement released by the Eastern Railway, the victims were walking on the track when they were run over by the Jhajha-Asansol Memu passenger train.
Initial reports suggested that the victims were passengers of Anga Express which was on halt due to a fire call. The reports further claimed that passengers deboarded the train and were run over the Memu train.
The injured are being taken to the hospital, search operation is still ongoing and the death toll may rise.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu offered his condolences to the deceased through a post on X.
"Pained by the mishap in Jamtara, Jharkhand. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon," PM Modi said.
