Pune: Alandi's BJP mayor, son arrested for dowry death of daughter-in-law

Pune: Three persons, including the husband and mother-in-law of a deceased who was found dead at Alandi area in Pune last month, were arrested in an alleged dowry case on Wednesday, police said.
Vaijayanti Umargikar, the mother-in-law of the woman, is the president of Alandi Municipal Corporation, who won the election on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket, police said.
The mother of the deceased is also the councilor of the Bharatiya Janata Party of Pimpri Chinchwad Metropolitan Corporation near Pune.
The victim, 21-year-old Priyanka Umargikar, was married to Abhishek Ashok Umargekar, a resident of Alandi pilgrimage area on November 16, 2021.
According to reports, the bride family had given BMW car to the groom along with valuable jewelery in the dowry, but groom's side thirst for the dowry never quenched.
The victim had disclosed about the alleged harassment faced by her to her father before she allegedly took the extreme step, according to police.
Relatives of the deceased have accused her husband's family of inciting her to commit suicide and torturing her for dowry.
On June 10, her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room. Upon receiving the information, Alandi police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the government hospital for the post-mortem.
A purported audio clip of the victim has also come to light in which she is telling her father how her in-laws were insisting her for seeking for money for home furniture, the police said.
A case was registered and trio was arrested in the case, the police added. (UNI)
