Tollywood actors join politics ahead of Bengal elections

Kolkata: Tollywood, West Bengal’s entertainment industry, is virtually divided into two poles with actors and actresses joining either Trinamool Congress or the opposition BJP as the state is heading for the 294-seat assembly election scheduled in April-May, 2021.
A day after nearly half-a-dozen Tollywood artists joined the TMC in the presence of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, actress Payal Sarkar on Thursday joined the saffron brigade in presence of party’s state president Dilip Ghosh.
Actor Yash Dasgupta had joined the BJP in the presence of party’s West Bengal in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP national vice-president Mukul Roy and Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta on Wednesday.
On the same day former India cricketer Ashok Dinda joined the BJP in north Kolkata.
Ashok Dinda, who recently announced his retirement from all forms cricket, joined the Bharatiya Janta Party in presence of the Union Minister Babul Supriyo and state BJP vice-president Arjun Singh at a public meeting.
The pacer had represented India in 13 ODIs and nine T20Is, picking 12 and 17 wickets, respectively.
His former colleague cricketer Manoj Tiwary and some Bengali film stars joined the Trinamool Congress on the same day in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Hooghly.
Actors Raj Chakraborty, Kanchan Mullick, Sayoni Ghosh also joined Mamata Banerjee’s party. (UNI)
