Kaushambi (UP): Three members of a Dalit family were shot dead allegedly over a land dispute in the Sandeepan Ghat area of Kaushambi district in Uttar Pradesh, after which agitated villagers set eight houses on fire on Friday, a police officer said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said Horilal (62), a resident of Mohiuddinpur Gaus village, lived along with his daughter Brajkali (22) and son-in-law Shiv Sagar (26) in a hut made on the land given on lease.

He said that Hori Lal was having a dispute with his neighbours over the land given to him on lease, and it is alleged they wanted to grab it. "Hori Lal, his daughter Brajkali, and son-in-law Shiv Sagar were shot dead late on Thursday night while they were sleeping outside the hut," he said.

The SP said that the incident came to fore on Friday morning when the villagers spotted the bodies of the trio lying in a pool of blood. "Hori Lal's neighbours had escaped after locking their houses. The agitated villagers torched the houses of Hori Lal's neighbours," he said.

He said that senior officers, along with the force and fire tenders, reached the spot and controlled the situation. "Hori Lal's son-in-law, Shiv Sagar, ran a Sahaj Jan Sewa Kendra from a rented shop. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination," he said. (UNI)
