India suffered a heartbreaking loss to South Africa in the Women’s World Cup match held in Visakhapatnam on Thursday (October 9). Despite Richa Ghosh’s brilliant 94 off 77 balls, the Indian team fell short, losing by 3 wickets. Nadine de Klerk’s explosive unbeaten 84 off 54 balls powered South Africa to victory.
South Africa’s Strong Chase
Chasing a target of 252, South Africa’s innings was anchored by captain Laura Wolvaardt (70 runs), Chloe Tryon (49 runs), and Nadine de Klerk’s match-winning knock. De Klerk smashed 84 not out in just 54 balls, hitting 8 fours and 5 sixes. The Proteas reached the target in 48.5 overs with seven wickets down, finishing at 252/7.
India’s Collapse and Richa’s Lone Battle
India began well, reaching 55 without loss, but a dramatic collapse followed as the team slipped to 102/6 by the 26th over. Richa Ghosh then fought back fiercely, hitting 11 fours and 4 sixes to help India recover and post a total of 251 in 49.5 overs.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Honest Admission
After the defeat, captain Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t hold back, criticizing the top-order batters for failing to take responsibility. “As a top order, we didn’t step up when needed. We have to change our approach and play longer innings. It’s a long tournament, so we must stay positive. It was a tough game, but we learned a lot from it,” she said.
Harmanpreet herself managed only 9 runs from 24 balls, while Harleen Deol (13), Jemimah Rodrigues (0), and Deepti Sharma (4) also struggled with the bat.
The skipper, however, praised Richa Ghosh for her exceptional performance. “Richa has been outstanding for us. Her power hitting today was brilliant. She’s capable of playing big innings, and I hope she continues this form,” Harmanpreet added.
