Madrid: Spanish tennis star Garbine Muguruza announced her retirement at an event linked to the Laureus Awards ceremony which will be held in Madrid on Monday.

The 30-year-old former world No. 1, who won the 2016 French Open and Wimbledon in 2017, as well as the 2021 WTA Finals, had been inactive for around a year after seeing she needed a break from the sport.

"I am retiring to open a new chapter of my life. A new era, a new life," said Muguruza, adding she was going to focus on other things.

She said "retirement" was a really "strong" word to use at age 30, but insisted life has other things to do.

"Professional tennis deprives you of many things," insisted Muguruza.

"I want to make up for lost time and do normal things. I have plans to start a family, I want to get married, have a dog," she added, insisting she will remain in the world of tennis in some way.
