A tailor in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has been fined Rs 7,000 by the consumer court for failing to deliver a blouse to a woman on time. The court ruled that the delay amounted to a “deficiency in service.”
The incident dates back to December 2024, when a woman from the Navrangpura area had a wedding to attend on December 24. She paid Rs 4,395 in advance to a local tailor a month ago to stitch her blouse, who promised to deliver it before the ceremony.
However, when the woman visited the tailor’s shop on December 14 to collect it, the blouse was not stitched according to her measurements and design. After she complained, the tailor assured her he would fix it before the wedding — but the deadline passed, and the blouse never reached her.
Frustrated, the woman sent a legal notice and filed a complaint with the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. The tailor did not appear during the hearing, leading the court to proceed ex parte.
The commission stated that failing to provide timely service after receiving advance payment constituted a clear case of service deficiency. The court ordered the tailor to refund Rs 4,395 with 7% annual interest and pay an additional Rs 2,500 as compensation for mental distress and legal expenses.
