‘Check your oranges’: Yuvraj Singh's YouWeCan foundation trolled for 'insensitive' breast cancer awareness ad

Wednesday, 23 October 2024 (17:45 IST)
A breast cancer awareness campaign by cricketer and cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh's non-profit organisation is being trolled online for using the word "oranges" to refer to breasts.

"Check your oranges once a month," says one of the creatives of the ad by YouWeCan Foundation. The poster shows a young woman standing in a bus, holding two oranges, while an elderly seated nearby is seen holding a crate of oranges.

A social media user shared a photo of the ad pasted inside a Delhi Metro coach, slamming Yuvraj Singh's organization as well as Delhi Metro for being the ‘most tone deaf advertisement’.

"How will a country raise breast cancer awareness if we can’t even call breasts what they are. Saw this at Delhi Metro and like what the hell? Check your oranges? Who makes these campaigns, who approves them? Are we governed by such dumb people that they let this poster become public?" said the user with the handle name Confusedicius.

The user in other posts also tagged Yuvraj Singh and Delhi Metro demanded the removal of the poster, describing it as “shameful and embarrassing.”

@OfficialDMRC this advertisement is one of the most tone deaf advertisements I have ever seen. Will you put up any advertisement if someone pays you? Please remove this. @YOUWECAN - get this off the metro. This advert is a no go.

Check out reactions on the post:

They are fighting for real change and improvements on the ground while you are just grandstanding. You can communicate your issues with the ad in a respectable manner as a feedback rather than this outraging.

Even it is an AI image. Yuvi himself is a cancer survivor and if it is done by his org then it seems they don’t understand the gravity of the issue and how ideally it should be communicated.

The foundation had recently launched the advertising campaign 'Your Health is in Your Hands', aiming to create awareness among women about the need for regular self-breast-examination for early-stage detection of breast cancer.
