A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening when a bridge built over the Indrayani river in Pune’s Kundmala area collapsed, resulting in the death of five tourists and leaving 15–20 others feared drowned.
The accident occurred in the Maval region of Pune rural district — a popular tourist destination especially during the monsoon season. According to local authorities, nearly 20 tourists were on the bridge at the time when it suddenly gave way due to the force of the swollen river waters.
Kundmala, located near Lonavala, sees a huge influx of visitors during the monsoons due to its scenic beauty. However, the region had been witnessing heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, especially for the ghat areas.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the bridge was in dilapidated condition. Eyewitnesses also stated that motorcycles were present on the bridge at the time, possibly adding to the load and leading to the structure's failure.
