Venice: A pall of grief descended upon the production of "Emily in Paris" after assistant director Diego Borella collapsed and died on set here.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening at around 7 p.m. at the storied Hotel Danieli, where the production was staging its final sequence of the day. Despite the swift intervention of the production's medical team, Borella could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local reports, including La Repubblica, suggest a sudden cardiac arrest as the likely cause of death, reports DEADLINE.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” a Paramount Television Studios spokesperson said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Filming was momentarily suspended in the aftermath but recommenced the following day. The series, which Netflix renewed for a fifth season last year, had recently completed a shoot in Rome before returning to Paris.
“I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up,” said series creator Darren Star last month.
“We filmed in Rome for the first four weeks, and that was an exciting experience to be there. Now, we’re back in Paris, Emily is definitely back in Paris.”
