The Ramsay Brothers, famous for their horror films like Dak Bangla, Purani Haveli, and Purana Mandir, created many unforgettable stories. Among them, Veerana (1988) remains one of their most talked-about films. While audiences remember the movie for its lead actress Jasmine Dhunna and its chilling story, few know that the idea for the film was inspired by a real-life incident.

The Story of Veerana

In the movie, Jasmine Dhunna plays a young beautiful woman possessed by a dark spirit. She seduces men, forces them into intimacy, and ultimately drinks their blood. The eerie theme and Jasmine’s performance gave the film cult status in Indian horror cinema.

A Real Encounter Behind the Film

Alisha, granddaughter of producer F.U. Ramsay, shared the real story behind Veerana in her book Ghosts in Our Backyard: The Ramsays' Real-Life Encounters with the Supernatural.

She reveals that in 1983, Shyam Ramsay was returning from Mahabaleshwar to Mumbai after completing the shoot of Purana Mandir. On the way, a mysterious woman asked him for a lift.

According to the account, the woman was strikingly beautiful but strangely quiet. When Shyam tried to speak to her, she did not respond. Moments later, he noticed something terrifying—her feet were inverted. Shocked, he braked the car, and the woman calmly got out and walked away into the darkness. Then Shyam Ramsay quickly drove away.

Shyam Ramsay later used the bizarre real-life experience as inspiration for his film Veerana.
